WATER & LYE
Water:
Water plays a crucial role in the soap making process. It serves several purposes:
- Emulsifier: Water acts as an emulsifier, helping to mix the fats and oils with the lye. This creates a stable mixture that can be poured into molds to form soap.
- Heat Transfer: Water helps to transfer heat during the saponification process. This heat is necessary for the chemical reaction between the lye and fats to occur.
- Hydration: Water helps to hydrate the soap, ensuring that it has a soft and creamy texture.
- Solvent: Water acts as a solvent, dissolving the lye and other ingredients in the soap mixture.
Lye (Sodium Hydroxide):
Lye is a crucial ingredient in soap making. It reacts with fats and oils to undergo a process called saponification. During this chemical reaction, the fats and oils break down, combining with the lye to form soap molecules.
The primary purpose of lye in soap is to:
- Emulsify fats and oils: Lye helps to mix the fats and oils with water, creating a stable mixture.
- Neutralize the oils: Lye neutralizes the acidic properties of the oils, making the soap suitable for use on the skin.
- Create soap molecules: The combination of lye and fats results in the formation of soap molecules, which have cleansing properties.
